My first truly lucid dream

I had my first truly lucid dream.

It was slightly.... terrifying?

I was walking down the street with a friend and suddenly there was a man swinging a chain saw at us.
I pushed her back out of the way--and his chain saw turned into an axe and he threw it at me, making a huge gash in my leg.

It must have been the lack of pain in that moment that told me it was a dream. I picked up the light as a feather axe and wondered what would happen if I threw it back at someone in the dream.

I threw the axe at the man walking near us, but as it pierced his skin, I thought, "but I don't want it to hurt him!"  So the moment the gash went into his skin, it had vanished.

I then began to wonder what I could control in my dream.

I raised my hands and told my mind to stop time--and time stopped.

I could see the people around me so clearly on the street, paused right where they had been walking.

I decided I wanted to try to turn the dream into another dream, and that I would start simple by changing the appearance of one person in the dream.

I walked up to an unidentifiable man in the dream and tried to change his appearance, but the moment I started to try to mess with it, his face began to melt off.

The melting began with his face, then the background behind him.  As everything melted it began to turn grey and it looked as if it were nothing more than an impression made by a push pin toy...

Then everything faded to black...but I was still in my dream, hearing my thoughts, questioning why I couldn't control the dream.

My question now is, was I really dreaming? Or just laying there with my eyes closed while asking myself why I couldn't control the dream? Will I ever be able to know?
