The Songwriter Diary: How Artists Make Money Online

Hey guys! So I just got a sales report back from CD Baby and I wanted to share part of it with you guys so you can see how artists make money online.

Two of the major ways artists make money online are by downloads and streaming. Downloading a song gives an artist a one time payment for you to be able to play the song an unlimited amount of times. Streaming is where you have to listen to the song online on an app such as Spotify, and the artist usually makes an average of $0.005 per stream. Spotify's theory is that listeners will listen to the same song multiple times over and over so that within the lifetime of the song, the artist will end up making more money than the $0.99 they might have made on one sale on iTunes.
