A Winter's Walk to the Subway and a Street Corner Muffin

Today was my first day of work at my first "big girl job" out of college.  I am now officially a Digital Media Consultant for BrightShop, a digital marketing company that is a branch of a larger entertainment company, Primary Wave.  My first day of work was excellent! But...what I really want to share with you, was my trip getting there.

I left myself an hour to get to work.  I was going to let myself take a cab today, since it was my first day.  I planned on 10 minutes to get a cab, a 20 minute cab ride, and 30 minutes to relax and eat a good breakfast before going in to work.  If you've ever visited or lived in New York, you'll know that making traveling plans is a waste of time, because things always come up.

It has been snowing and sleeting, a TON.  They said last week was the blizzard, but I think that this is the true snowmageddon.  It's normally difficult to get a cab when it's snowing/sleeting, but when I walked to the corner, there was a cab just waiting with his lights on!  I was so excited and ran over with my umbrella waving in the air, but then the light turned green, and he drove straight past me! I was frustrated but, how long could it possibly take to get another cab?

So I waited and waited. Ten minutes passed and still no cab.  Then an old man walked over to me.  He was wearing glasses and a long leather jacket with fur coming out of the sleeves, around the neck, and where it gathered around his waist.  I didn't realize he was speaking to me at first, and that's probably because he was speaking in French.  I just looked at him confused, and said "Sorry?" He started laughing and said "Oh I'm sorry! I thought you spoke French! How long have you been waiting?"  It took me a minute to answer him because my mind was still wondering, why in the world does he think I speak French?  A moment later I told him I'd been waiting for ten minutes. He scoffed and walked away.  Distracted, still a little confused by this encounter, I had my face turned away from the road.  A cab drove by in the slush, and just like all of the movies where a car drives through the puddle and sprays the unlucky character, I found myself covered in snowy gray slush.  It was almost a laughing moment, and I realized it was time to walk.

At the next avenue I found a cab and felt relieved. I ran up to the door, then I saw the driver shaking his head no at me, and he turned off his lights, signally he had someone in the cab already. Geez why didn't you turn them off before! I thought.

So I kept walking and at 77th and 3rd, only one ave from the subway station, I found a cab. And I thought, no!  This is just a winter's walk in New York City, and I'm going to be a New Yorker and take the subway!

Have you ever been stuck in rush hour? Well imagine all of those cars, are people, and the road is a tiny little train that everyone is trying to wedge their bodies into.  I somehow managed to squeeze into the first train that got to 77th. Granted, there wasn't even enough room for me to grab the railings, but that didn't matter there were enough bodies wedged around me that I couldn't possibly have fallen down.

When I got off the subway at 14th St. I had 15 minutes to get breakfast and get to the office.  One of the nice things about New York, is that there are little food trucks and carts everywhere! I stopped at the first one I saw that had a big sign on the side reading "COFFEE!" and I got a blueberry muffin and a large hazelnut coffee.  I then stood under the red and white stripped awning of TGI Friday's to escape the pouring sleet and inhaled my delicious street corner muffin.

Today was a fabulous winter's day in New York City :)
