As sad as I am that Glenn is "dead," (I was literally balling during the gut-wrenching-gut-ripping out scene, I hope he is dead. Not because I don't love Glenn, because I do, but because how vague they made the scene is extremely emotionally manipulative. In my mind, he has to be dead. But the explosion of hope online has curbed my grieving process! It's like, just let me grieve!
Here is my analysis of what has happened. (Warning, spoilers from the comics!)
Why Glenn is Dead:
- Nicolas and Glenn:
- Glenn's fate seems to be tied to Nicolas' fate. Glenn saves people, and Nicolas is the first person he has failed to save. When Nicolas dies, it makes sense that Glenn would die with him, symbolizing Glenn's failure to save Nicolas.
- Glenn and Rick:
- The walkie-talkies symbolize the first time they met when Rick was trapped in the tank
- This is directly referred to when Glenn says "Good luck dumbass" just like he did the first time they meet
- The Walking Dead Cannot be this Desperate
- Like I said, as much as I will be devastated if Glenn is dead, I will be even more upset if Glenn is alive because it feels like such a cheap shot from TWD. They have characters escape from desperate situations all the time but, they never use this much emotional manipulation. I have to believe they're better than this.
- Giving the Audience Time to Grieve:
- Glenn has been a fan favorite from the beginning, people are obviously not going to cope with losing him very well. It makes sense to me if they do his death over two episodes so that people have time to accept that he's really gone.
- The Pocket Watch:
- Right before Glenn and Nicolas went to go set the feed store on fire Glenn got out Hershel's pocket watch. It seems like he wrote something to Maggie in it, which makes me think she's going to find the pocket watch later when they find either his eaten body, or him as a zombie.
- David and Betsy:
- This episode we got to know the story of David and Betsy. As we heard their story there was no denying that they had a lot of parallels to Glenn and Maggie. It was almost as if they were using David and Betsy to tell the story of Glenn and Maggie. Reminding us of how they met, how they fell in love as the world fell apart, and how they've always saved each other. David's death seems to be a symbolic parallel to Glenn's death.
- 90 Minute Episode:
- Season 6 episode 4 is going to be 90 minutes, which means they have a lot of explaining to do.
- It's what would have really happened:
- The Walking Dead is pretty good at keeping it as real as they can for a zombie apocalypse. It has been awhile since someone died without something huge happening, but in a real apocalypse, people would just...die. I think it would be really mature of TWD to kill a main character in a scene as simple as getting stuck in an alley.
- "He's covered in walker guts!"
- Some people think that since he's covered in Nicolas' guts this will disguise him from the walkers just like Glenn and Rick used guts to walk through a heard in the second episode of the series. BUT Nicolas shot himself in the head so he will never turn into a walker, SO they will eat straight through him to Glenn.
Why Glenn is Alive:
- He's a fan favorite:
- I have always thought that Rick, Darryl and Glenn were the three that they couldn't kill off. Yes, The Walking Dead kills off a lot of people, but it isn't exactly Game of Thrones where NO ONE is safe
- The Dumpster:
- Rumor has it there's a Glenn sized hole under the dumpster that he can slide right under. BUT this would only work IF there was also a loud noise that drew the walkers out of the alley. If Glenn was just hiding under the dumpster, the walkers would wait there for him until he starved to death rather than walk off for no reason.
- The Comic:
- In the comic Glenn DOES die...just way later and in a different way. I won't spoil how or when, but it happens. So some people theorize that he has to be alive so he can die another way later. (Even thought they SO don't follow the comics.)
So what do you guys think!? Comment below and let me know your theories!
