Interview with Lydia Dall

When and how did you write the song "Young?"
I wrote the song young about a year ago. I was seeing all of these pictures on Facebook of my cousin and her friends in high school out having a good time and it made me think about what that was like for me. High school is such an awesome time because you have all of this freedom and don't have a lot of responsibility yet but you only have about three days to live that freedom. I remember living for those three days, getting every memory we could out of them. So that's kind of what young is about.

What makes the song "Young" special to you?
Young is like a little picture of home to me. They are my real life experiences or my families. Every time I hear this song or sing it I'm there. I get that feeling I had when I was that age, that anything is possible for those three days.

When are you planning to release your full album?
I'm planning to release my full album this spring. As of right now we are shooting for March.

Where do you get your songwriting inspiration?
Everywhere. My experiences. My friends experiences. Things people say to me or to my friends or on a tv show I'm watching or quotes I see on Pinterest. Anything and everything.

What can your fans expect from you in the near future?
Well I have a lot of fun surprises surrounding the release of this single and my album. I don't want to give anything away but there may or may not be a video with words and music coming their way soon :)

Do you have any upcoming shows?
Right now I'm playing a lot of writers rounds here in Nashville and planning some smaller shows in IL. But I am starting to plan a tour for after the release my album. Any suggestions of where I should play??

Do you have a favorite performance memory?
I think my favorite performances are the ones I do for just my family and friends when I show them a song for the first time. I love seeing there faces and reactions because they are so pure and give me a good read on if the song is something people can connect with.

Do you have a favorite songwriting memory?
Just recently I wrote a song with two of my best friends Sami Jo Sarin and Aimee Webber about kind of leaving home and the guidance your parents give you. We all cried that day. So many feels lol! As of right now that's probably it.

What inspires you to write?
Everything. Including the people who listen to my music or I hope that do. I remember in high school I would listen to Taylor swift every day and it was like she knew me. Like she was there going through everything with me every emotion and experience. I always felt like I had someone who understood me. That's what inspires me and that's my ultimate goal is to help people and let them know they aren't alone and I've been there too.

When did you start playing music?
I started with piano lessons in 3rd grade and then joined the band, then musicals, formal voice lessons in 5th grade and it just kind of snowballed from there.

When did you start writing music?
I wrote my first song probably in grade school. I think it was about having a party and then your parents coming home and breaking it up? My friend and I danced around her pool deck singing and I'm sure we looked ridiculous but we had so much fun. However the first song I actually showed to people I wrote in between junior high and high school.

Where do you see yourself musically in 5 years?
Hopefully doing the same thing but better and reaching more people. At the core of it I just want to write good songs and sing them for people so of I'm still doing that I'll be happy.

Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
I know it sounds super corny but Taylor Swift. Shocking I know. Girl moves to Nashville plays the guitar, writes songs about boys.. Blah blah blah. I'd love to be able to say it's someone like Dolly Parton or Loretta Lynn or someone classic but Taylor was the person who made me want to write songs. She was the first artists that I had experienced who was that connected to her music and that truly connected with me. Also she's incredibly awkward and gives zero you know what's about what other people think so she's pretty bomb in my book. Also her cats are adorable and really at the end of the day that's what matters ;)

I'm also really inspired by Sara Bareilles and Kacey Musgraves really any good songwriter and artist but Taylor started it all :)
