Tip #17: Know what chords are in the key you're writing in
Let's say you're writing a song in the key of G and so far your verse is: G, C, D, C and you don't know where to go for the pre-chorus. Knowing what chords are in the key of G would let you know that you can use Em, which is the 6m in the key of G.
Notice how you have to use the 6minor instead of just the 6? When writing using chords within a key you need to know more than just what notes make up a key, you need to know if each chord is major or minor within the key.
See below to get started!
The one chord should always be major/major 7
The two chord should always be minor/minor 7
The three chord should always be minor/minor 7
The four chord should always be major/major 7
The five chord should always be major/dominant 7
The six chord should always be minor/minor 7
The seven chord should always be diminished/half diminished (minor 7 flat 5)
