Writing the truth is awesome. But sometimes when writers sit down to write, their truth doesn't always flow out. Maybe nothing interesting has happened recently in their life, maybe something awful has happened that will make a great song in a few years but is too fresh to write about, maybe they're just sick of writing about themselves or maybe they're just having writers block.
The truths you write about, don't have to be your personal experience. I've been writing a lot recently about world issues and it has been so eye opening. Find a topic you are interested in and research it, then let the song pour out sharing others truths.
You can also use television, movies and literature for inspiration. For example, the other night I was having a bit of writers block while trying to write a song. I started to think about this Netflix original series I'm sort of obsessed with; it is called "BoJack Horseman." It is an adult cartoon about a horse living in L.A. who was a super big celebrity in the 90s and is now trying to make a come back. (Haha, yes yes, he's a horse, but he walks on two legs and has hands and feet like a human, it's all animals not just him. You...get used to it!) So I was thinking about BoJack and life as a washed up celebrity, and the song just started to pour out!
Inspiration is all around you! Never put yourself in a box or cross anything out!
PS: I'll make a special blog post when I release my BoJack Horseman song! And in the meantime if you're 17+ years-old, WATCH BOJACK! (It's awesome.)
