Songwriting tip of the day #36

Tip #36: Use the "Pyramid of Language"

The pyramid of language is credited to the late great, Frank Conroy.

This pyramid generally refers to writing outside of songwriting but we there is still a lot that songwriters can learn from this pyramid.

The base of the pyramid starts with making sure that your writing has meaning, sense, clarity and that you use words that have the correct literal meaning.  If your writing is not clear, then it doesn't matter if you use a beautiful metaphor, the song will be lost!  Each section relies on the section beneath it.  I know it's tempting to go straight for the "fancy stuff," but make sure you're writing a song with a strong base as well!
